International Labour Day, which falls on May 1st every year, is a global festival celebrated nationally by people from more than 80 countries around the world. It originates from the strikes and demonstrations of the working class, and now is the festival representing the teamwork and fight of the labouring people for their own rights.

In China, the first time it was celebrated was in 1907 in Harbin, and at that time it was not very popularized. But later in 1920, there were around 10 cities that took part in the celebration, making it more powerful and colourful, signaling that International Labour Day was going deeper and deeper among the masses.

Nowadays, the Party and the government commend workers who have made outstanding contributions on this special day. People would gather in parks, theaters and squares to participate in various celebratory gatherings or recreational activities, such as labour competitions, sports meetings and parties. For many people, International Labour Day is also a good time to travel. The significance of it is that workers fight for their legitimate rights and interests through the struggle, with the tenacious, brave and unyielding spirit of struggle. It is a historic progress of human civilization and democracy.
