Many residential communities in the eastern city of Laixi are in lockdown. Xia Ruixue reports on efforts to guarantee supplies of basic necessities to residents.

Early in the morning, Qu Guochun was busy picking strawberries in his greenhouses in Malianzhuang Town of Laixi City, Eastern China's Shandong Province. He had received new orders online from the local residents, most of whom are in lock-down communities due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

QU CHUNGUO Manager, Shengshijiayuan Family Farm "There're 10 strawberry planting greenhouse in my farm. I thought I would have them rot in the field due to the outbreak. Thanks to the local government, I can sell around 250 kilograms of strawberries per day."

Malianzhuang Town is renowned for its fruits. There're more than 3,330 hectares of fruit plantations.

During the pandemic, the local government built an online platform, where people can buy farm goods directly from local farmers at home.

When the outbreak hit the city, volunteers were dispatched to make sure each order was delivered to customers, even in lock-down areas.

WANG YUNCHENG Supermarket Staff "My job is to deliver the orders to the entrance of community compounds. The community staff will then deliver them to each home. I don't have any direct contact with the customers."

MISS ZHAO Local Resident "I trust our government. You see, we don't have any shortage of daily supplies. The supermarkets are open every day. And the prices keep stable."

The city of Laixi, about 100 kilometers from downtown Qingdao, was hit by a COVID-19 outbreak at the beginning of this month.

After seven rounds of mass testing in the past 10 days, the numbers of new confirmed cases and asymptomatic cases saw a decrease.

Local officials took a series of measures to contain the virus after the outbreak. Travelling in and out of Laixi is restricted. Schools are closed and classes have moved online.

And there are steps to make sure disruptions to people's lives are kept to a minimum.
